Statement of Need
The development of target-specific therapies has led to major advances in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), in particular with regard to five-year survival rates. Despite these advances, clinicians in the community setting still face challenges in managing patients who are older than 65 years of age and who are more likely to have multiple co-morbidities, poorer performance status, unfavorable cytogenetics, or who express multi-drug resistance. Unfortunately, clinical trials do not always address these challenges in their study designs, leading to a potential gap between the data in the trials and the reality of treating this group of patients. Clinicians are thus faced with making difficult decisions in an environment where information sharing can provide a true benefit in patient care outcomes.
Through this informative and interactive program, clinicians will be able to review the latest findings in AML research and apply these principles in context to their everyday practice. By bringing together local oncologists and utilizing the latest technological advances to deliver CE, PESG will bring the “clinic” to the web, providing a peer-to-peer, interactive, case-based educational forum that emphasizes interactive discussion and sharing of best practices.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this continuing medical education activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify factors that may complicate the treatment of AML in older patients
- Discuss the molecular and cytogenetic pathogenesis of AML in the context of newer therapies to manage this disease
- Develop treatment strategies for patients with relapsed or refractory AML or for those with multiple co-morbidities
- Apply new information on targeted therapies and “best practices” in treatment strategies into clinical practice
